Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869–1944) was one of Britain’s greatest architects and an important contributor to the history of British interior decoration and furniture design. Although renowned for his architecture, many of his commissions included complete interior schemes, bespoke furniture, lighting, fittings and garden design, creating unified works in which architecture and interiors were conceived together. His collaborations with Gertrude Jekyll and his country house commissions established a distinctive English domestic style, while his later work in New Delhi and numerous public buildings demonstrated an extraordinary command of classical design. Lutyens occupies an important place within the history of British interior design through his holistic approach to architecture, interiors and furnishings.
